And I am so excited to be back at the Tilles Center with my solo show and my incredible band.
I want to introduce to you these incredible musicians that are up here with me.
On drums, we have Spencer Cohen.
(audience applauding) On bass, we have Lexi Bodick.
(audience applauding) On guitar, we have Mike Bono.
(audience applauding) And my musical director, my arranger, my accompanist, Mr. Dan Lipton.
(audience cheering and applauding) We're in for a good time tonight, let me just tell you.
Now, I'm so glad that we all dressed up because as I look around, you all look so nice.
You really do.
And now, I know we're so close to New York City, so I know so many of you have seen so many Broadway shows, some shows you've seen me in, some of you have seen me in concert, I recognize a lot of faces over here.
But how many first-timers do we have in the audience tonight?
Right here, over here, here.
Not a lot of first-timers.
Alright.
Alright.
Well, for those of you that have not been to one of my shows, I'm gonna fill you in.
Okay, yes, I'm Mandy Gonzalez, I am Latina, but a lot of people don't know that I'm also Jewish.
(audience clapping) Shana Tova.
(audience laughing) It's true.
My father's Mexican, my mother's Jewish.
And I, you know, well, I went into show business.
(audience laughing) But the thing about being a part of two cultures and as you're growing into the person that you're meant to be, the thing that I was the luckiest for was having two grandmothers, an abuelita and a bubbe, and I learned so, so much from them.
And both of them used to sing this song to me in their own way, and now I'm gonna sing it for you tonight.

Now, my career kind of started in a very interesting way.
I was about 19 years old and somebody had told me about an open call.
They were looking for backup singers, new backup singers for Bette Midler.
Do you all know who Bette Midler is?
Yeah.
Well, I was a huge fan and so...
I know "Hocus Pocus," I just watched the second one with my daughter and it's so good.
But I'm a huge fan, and so I said, "Well, yeah, I wanna go wait in line and try to be a backup singer for Bette Midler," and I got the job.
Yes.
Thank you.
(audience applauding) And I left school, which I don't recommend for anybody, but this was my path, I left school and I went on the road in a tour bus.
Bette Midler was not in the tour bus, she would take a plane, but I was in the tour bus with the other backups and that is really what brought me to New York and what started my career.
And so I sing this next song in tribute to her from one of her albums.
And I put my own little spin on it.
Here we go.

Oh.
You know, I have been so fortunate in my career to be part of kind of a meteor named Lin-Manuel Miranda.
(audience clapping) Yes.
(audience cheering and applauding) I remember getting the call from my agent at the time, I was in another show that wasn't doing very well, and they said, "You know, there's a new show and it's gonna be cast with all Latinos and it's Latino writers and would you wanna go meet the writer in the basement of the Drama Bookshop?"
(audience laughing) Now, if you're an actor in New York, you know where the Drama Bookshop is 'cause it's where you get new plays, music, you see other actors, writers.
But I had no idea that there was a basement in the Drama Bookshop.
But I was intrigued by this project so I said, "Alright, okay."
And I remember walking down those steps in the Drama Bookshop, to the basement, and Lin-Manuel Miranda opened the door and there was Tommy Kail, Bill Sherman, Quiara Hudes, all the people from the creative team of "In the Heights" that became my family.
And at that time they asked me to sing the role of Nina Rosario.
(audience cheering and applauding) Thank you.
And it's not very often where you get to be part of a project the whole way through.
So I started with that show in a reading, where you just sit around a table and read out of the script, into a workshop and then into off-Broadway and then onto Broadway.
And the last memory I have is all of us running up in the aisles of Radio City Music Hall to go up with Lin-Manuel to get the Tony for Best Musical that year.
So it was such an incredible thing.
And for those of you that haven't seen "In the Heights," it's about a neighborhood in Washington Heights, and Washington Heights, it's at the very top of Manhattan and it's predominantly a Latino community.
And Nina, when you first meet her, Nina is the one in the neighborhood, the one that everybody put their hopes and dreams into, the one that got out, the first to go to college, first generation.
But she's coming home because she has a big secret to tell her parents that she's actually left school.
So this is when you meet Nina and she's trying to build up the courage.

Now, since we're friends, I'd like to tell you a story.
You wanna hear it?
- Yes.
- Here it goes.
Okay, so I grew up in Southern California, my...
Thank you.
My father's family is from Northern California.
So we would go see that side of my family for birthdays, weddings, funerals, things like that, 'cause it took about five hours to go see my father's side of the family.
But this one day, I was about eight years old and my mom came up to my sister and my brother and I and said that we were gonna go up to see my dad's family because my dad was gonna be reunited with his band, The Enchantments.
Great name.
And I was so excited because up until that point, I had no idea that my father could sing.
And I sang all the time.
There were rules in my house, like, "No singing at the table, Mandy, no singing after this time."
I know some of you know this.
But I was so excited and my brother was like, "Whatever."
But we got into the VW bus and we drove up to Reedley, California.
And we were in this big hall and the new Enchantments were playing and I was sitting on my mom's lap and all of a sudden, I felt my dad tap my mom on the back and he goes, "Robin, Robin, Robin, Tino, our guitarist, he got stage fright.
He went out the bathroom window.
So the reunion's not gonna happen, I'm not gonna sing."
And I remember being, like, so devastated I started to cry and my brother was like, "Whatever."
And my mom in her very gentle way of doing things, turned and said, "Paul, we have come all this way.
Look at Mandy, Mandy's crying.
You better get out there and you better sing."
And he said, "Okay, Robin, okay, I'll figure it out."
So he came back and he said that they weren't gonna sing there but they were gonna go next door to Val's House.
He was the drummer and that's where they were gonna play.
So we all go to Val's House and I remember being on this kinda Lazy Boy chair with my brother who's like, "What?"
And I start to hear this music coming from the back of the house.
(upbeat music) So I start to follow it, and then I hear this voice and I look up, and it's my dad singing this song.

True story.
Yes.
You know, one thing that I do love, as well as people talking to me at the stage door about Nina, is when you are the green girl in "Wicked" on Broadway, a lot of times at the stage door, people will ask you, "Are you gonna do it again?
I saw you on YouTube, you should do it again.
You should do it again."
And I think to myself, "Oh, should I do it again?
Mandy, did you do it again?"
And I start to think about the 10-pound broom, 15-pound dress, going up and down trap doors, flying, and I think, "When am I gonna do it again?
When?
When, Dan?
When am I gonna do it again?
When?
When?
Never."

We're gonna do these next two songs.
And this next song is from my album "Fearless," and it was written by my dear friend, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
And, yes, thanks.
(audience cheers) And when he asked me what fearless meant to me, I told him the story of how my parents met.
My parents met as pen pals during the Vietnam War.
My father was drafted at 19.
My mom wanted to join the Peace Corps at 17 and her parents said, "Absolutely not."
So she did the next best thing, which was write to soldiers that maybe didn't have anybody to write to.
And one of those soldiers was my father.
And I'm happy to say that they just celebrated their 50-year wedding anniversary.
