It's wonderful to be here at Caramoor.
And it does feel very cozy in here with the menorahs and the lights and the Christmas trees.
(audience laughs) No, it's a holiday show, and we're gonna share music for the holidays and about warmth and about light.
And, you know, we need that light during the holidays, because there's a lot of dark in the world.
And these last 10 years that we've been a band have been difficult, and they've been also great.
And that's part of the human thing, right, is that we have the good and the bad.
And this is a song that kind of leans a little bit darker.
It's about this world.
It's about, I think, what's all front of mind for us.
Some, you know, whether it's political or what's going on globally, and not to be a downer, but this is like when we write songs, we try to be honest and be ourselves in them.
And this is a song that we wrote recently that we just had to write, it had to come out.
It's called, "What Kind of World."

But we also have teenagers... We have a 20-year-old and 19-year-old and a 3-year-old.
So we have two kids in college and one in diapers.

But we try to put everything we have into our music, everything we have out there into the universe.
And, you know, sometimes it's hard, it's hard.
Life can get really messy and crazy, and we try to just keep moving forward no matter what, no matter what happens.
And so many tough things seem to be happening right now.
We're so divided, and there's just so much hardship.
But it's like, how do we just trust in the future and trust that everything's gonna be okay?
And sometimes, you just wanna get in the car and just crank up the music and go, even if you don't know where you're going, just trust in where you're, just somewhere.

I don't want everyone whispering, "I thought this was a holiday show.

This is a beautiful Hanukkah song and lyrics by the great Woody Guthrie.
And we played one earlier, and that one he did write music to, and there's a recording of it that's great.
That one's called "The Hanukkah Dance."
And this one is one that we became aware of just a poem, just the words.
And a few different people have set music to this, and this is our version of the music.
And I love the lyrics, and it's perfect for a blistery, cold winter night like tonight.
'Cause it's about hunkering down and being warm and inviting in the stranger, which is such a beautiful part of Hanukkah and the holidays in general that we should give our warmth to someone else, and I think that's what's inside this song.
And this one's called "Hanukkah's Flame."

I mentioned it before, we've been a band for almost 10 years now.
And in all this time, I get a very similar question after the shows from folks out by whatever, the merch or whatever, and people are like, "How did a Jewish kid from Brooklyn "grow up loving bluegrass?"
Maybe you're all thinking that right now.
I have no idea.
But instead of answering the question, "All the time," which I don't mind answering, I just wrote this song which answers it all.
But more, it's funny and it's a joke.
But this song became something that is something that we try to live by.
And it's hard to be yourself sometimes, and it's not easy for me, but it's something I strive to do as best as I can, as much as I can, and this song is about all that.

(fiddle humming) - So it has been a really tough year and a really confusing year, frankly, for a band like us called Nefesh Mountain.
Nefesh means soul in Hebrew, and we're the Jewish ones, and we're proud of it.
(audience clapping) Thank you.
But I have to tell you, we have spent hours and hours trying to figure out what to say on all of the stages that we go to all over the world and the country.
- We have figured it out.
- We have?
- Yeah, we realized after all this time trying to figure out that whatever we say, it's wrong.
(audience laughs) - Because everyone is divided, and there is just such a, it's such a hard time to say anything.
And we are not politicians, and we don't have, you know, I'm not an expert.
I'm just heartbroken over the hate.
I'm heartbroken over the divide.
And we kind of came to this conclusion after hours and hours of trying to figure this out.
Really, what we are is a band proudly wearing this Jewish star, trying to put out love into the world.
That's our goal.
(audience clapping) That's it.
(instruments strumming) And in our world, in the world of Nefesh Mountain, it's a world where everyone is loved and embraced for who they are.
Everyone gets to be, "This Is Me."
There's no discrimination, none.
Every human is wonderful for who they are.
That's the Nefesh Mountain world.
This next song is so important to us.
It's a song that we sing on every stage.
And we sang it at the Grand Ole Opry when we went there, and we sing it, I know crazy, and we sing it everywhere we go.
We sang it in Hong Kong last year.
It's a song inspired by something that happened to us.
Years ago, my mother took Eric and I on a trip to Eastern Europe to visit the town that our families were from, and it changed our whole world, that trip, to learn of and to understand what happened to my ancestors in Eastern Europe during World War II.
And now to see this hate coming back, and it's very hard.
When we were on this trip, however, we were wandering around the Carpathian Mountains, and at one point we looked up in the sky, and we saw all of these little birds flying above us, these tiny little sparrows, like everywhere.
It was like weird.
And when we got home from this trip, we're trying to make sense of everything that happened and what's happening, and oh my gosh, and we kept thinking about those sparrows.
What was that?
One night late, we were talking and we thought, what if those sparrows were our ancestors?
And then I learned that sparrows live all over the world.
Did you know that?
Sparrows live all over the world.
And we thought, what if the sparrow is the spirit of every single person in this world who's been discriminated against for being themself.
What if the sparrow is the small but mighty?
And so we decided to write a whole album for the sparrows, (chuckles) and we did.
And this next song is called "A Sparrow Song," and it is dedicated to anyone in this world who does not feel loved, who is broken.
We love you so much, and this is an offering of love for a very complicated world.
