WHEN THEY FIRST SET OUT IN 1857 TO BUILD A GREAT PUBLIC SPACE THEY SAW IT AS THE PEOPLE'S PARK WHERE ALL COULD GATHER TOGETHER AS ONE COMMUNITY.
THEIR PHILOSOPHY ABOUT LANDSCAPE DESIGN WAS TIED TO THEIR STRONG BELIEF THAT BEING IN NATURE IS VITAL TO THE HEALTH OF EVERY HUMAN BEING.
THE PARK EXPERIENCE WAS ENVISIONED AS THE ANTI-DOTE TO THE STRESSES OF DAILY CITY LIFE.
WITH SCENIC DRIVES, WALKING PASSES, FOUNTAINS, PLAYGROUNDS AND PATHS THERE'S SOMETHING FOR ALL TO ENJOY.
WITH LUSH COLORFUL FOLIAGE IT'S A PLACE TO TAKE IN THE BEAUTY OF NATURE IN THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS.
THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF STEPPING ON LEAVES AND RELAXING BY THE MANY BODIES OF WATER ALL ADD TO THE SENSE OF SANCTUARY AND WELL BEING.
MAJOR CONCERT EVENTS ON THE GREAT LAWN OR CHAMBER MUSIC HAVE FOR DECADES MADE FOND MEMORIES.
THIS SUMMER THE PUBLIC THEATER WELCOMES CROWDS BACK.
SINCE 1962, OVER 5 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE ENJOYED MORE THAN 150 FREE PRODUCTIONS OF SHAKESPEARE AND OTHER CLASSICAL WORKS AS WELL AS MUSICALS.
NOW IN ITS 60th ANNIVERSARY SEASON, FREE SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK WAS CONCEIVED BY ITS VISIONARY FOUNDER, JOSEPH PATH.
HE WANTED TO MAKE GREAT THEATER ACCESSIBLE TO ALL AND ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY.
THE LIST OF ACCLAIMED PERFORMER WHO APPEARED INCLUDE LUM NARIES SUCH AS JAMES SCOTT, JAMES EARLY JONES, MERYL STREEP, KEVIN KLINE, SAM WATERTON, AL PACINO, AS WELL AS DENZEL WASHINGTON WHO PLAYED THE ROLE OF RICHARD III THE LAST TIME THE PLAY WAS PERFORMED 32 YEARS AGO.
THE FIRST PLAY IS A BOLD PRODUCTION OF RICHARD III, DIRECTED BY TONY AWARD NOMINEE ROBERT O'HARA.
DENY GUERARA PLAYS THE TITLE ROLE OF ONE OF SHAKESPEARE'S MOST ICONIC VILLAINS.
DETERMINED TO BE KING HE MANIPULATES, AND KILLS ALL WHO STAND BETWEEN HIM AND THE CROWN.

NOW LET'S VISIT KYKUIT, THE ROCKEFELLER ESTATE LOCATED JUST NORTH OF NEW YORK CITY.
IT'S ONE OF THE GREAT ESTATES OF THE HUDSON VALLEY.
KYKUIT IS THE DUTCH WORD FOR LOOKOUT, A FITTING NAME FOR THIS HOUSE LOCATE ON THE HIGHEST POINT IN THE HILLS WITH COMMANDING VIEWS OF THE HUDSON RIVER.
THE CLASSICAL REVIVAL STYLE VILLA WAS COMPLETE IN THE 1913 FOR JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER, FOUNDER OF STANDARD OIL, AND IN HIS DAY, THE RICHEST MAN IN AMERICA.
HOME TO FOUR GENERATIONS OF ROCKEFELLERS, TODAY THE HOUSE AND EXTENSIVE GARDENS, ENRICHED BY THE FAMILY'S SCULPTURE COLLECTION IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR TOURS.
VISITORS CAN ALSO ENJOY THE CHURCH OF UNION HILLS WITH STAINED GLASS WINDOWS BY HENRY MATISSE AND MARC CHAGALL, COMMISSIONED BY THE ROCKEFELLER FAMILY.

THERE WERE FOUR GENERATIONS OF FAMILY TO HAVE LIVED IN THIS HOME, AND IT WAS CONSIDERED THE FAMILY SEAT FOR JOHN DAVIDSON ROCKEFELLER SR.
THE WORK KYKUIT IS AN OLD DUTCH WORD.
IT MEANS LOOKOUT OR OVERLOOK.
IT IS FITTING BECAUSE WE ARE ON THE TOP OF THE HILL.
WE SIT 500 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL.
PERFECT AREA FOR A BEAUTIFUL HOME.
THE HOUSE IS DONE IN THE CLASSICAL STYLE AND THE GARDENS ARE GARDENS THAT YOU MIGHT FIND IN AN ITALIAN VILLA.
THE ORIGINAL BUILDING OF KYKUIT WAS IN 1909 WHEN THE FAMILY MOVED IN.
THEY REDID THE FACADE IN 1913 WITH A PEDIMENT RIGHT BELOW THE ROOF REMINISCENT OF THE ANCIENT ROMAN TEMPS.
WITHIN THAT SIT TWO FIGURES, ONE BEING APOLLO AND THE OTHER BEING DEMETER, THE GODDESS OF AGRICULTURE.
AND THAT WAS A SILL BOLL OF UNITY BETWEEN NATURE AND CULTURE, SOMETHING THIS ESTATE WAS MEANT TO EMBODY.
THERE WERE TWO IMPORTANT ARCHITECTS THAT WE HAD WORKING ON THIS HOME, ONE BEING OGDEN CODMAN WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INTERIOR OF THIS HOME.
WILLIAM S.BOSWORTH CREATED THE GARDENS IN THE ESTATE.
THE ONES THAT SURROUND ARE MORE INFORMAL AND THE FURTHER YOU GO THEY BECOME MORE INFORM AND GRADUATE INTO THE LANDSCAPE.
JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER JR. WAS ONE WHO PUT A LOT OF CLASSICAL SCULPTURE ON THE GROUND.
OCEANUS IS THE LARGEST FOUNTAIN WE HAVE ON THIS ESTATE.
IT WAS PLACED HERE IN 1913.
IT WAS FASHIONED AFTER THE OCEANUS YOU WOULD FIND IN BOBOLI GARDENS IN ITALY.
OCEANUS BEING THE KING OF THE RIVER GODS, SEATED TO POUR WATER FORTH INTO THE OCEANS.
THERE ARE THREE RIVER THERE IS, AND THEY REPRESENT THE RIVERS OF THE OLD WORLD.
THE REASON IT WAS PLACED LOOKING INTO THE WEST IS BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO LINK THE HUDSON RIVER, THE RIVER OF THE NEW WORLD, TO THE RIVERS OF THE OLD WORLD.
NELSON ALDRIDGE ROCKEFELLER WAS THE GRANDSON OF JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER SR.
HE RESIDED HERE AS THIRD GENERATION.
WHAT HE GAVE TO THIS ESTATE WAS SCULPTURE AND ART.
WE HAVE FIVE ART GALLERIES IN THE DOWNSTAIRS OF THE HOUSE FILLED WITH MODERN ART.
WE HAVE MORE THAN 70 PIECES OF OUTDOOR SCULPTURE ALONE, RANGING FROM HENRY MOORE TO NOGUCHI.
HE WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT ART.
A GREAT COLLECTOR OF THE ARTS.
AND HE CONSIDERED HIMSELF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ARTIST.
AND BY THAT HE MEANT HE WAS GOING TO STUDY THE ENVIRONMENT, FIND WHERE THE BEST LOCATION FOR EACH OF HIS OUTDOOR PIECES WOULD BE SO THAT SCULPTURE WOULD ENHANCE NATURE, AND IN TURN, NATURE WOULD ENHANCE THAT PIECE OF SCULPTURE.
TRY ANGULAR SURFACE IN SPACE BY THE ARTIST MAX BILL.
IT IS SAID AT THE END OF THE ROSE FORGPERGOLA.
IT'S AS IF IT'S A TELESCOPIC VIEW OF THE HUDSON.
THE INNER GARDEN IS FLANK BID TWO SUNKEN GARDENS.
WHEN NELSON LIVED HERE, HE EXCHANGED THE GARDENS AND PUT IN SUNKEN SWIMMING POOLS, WHICH MAKES THE PIECE HE PUT BETWEEN THE TWO POOLS PERFECTLY SITUATED.
SHE LOOKS AS IF SHE'S GOING JUMP IN THE WATER, AND WHEN NELSON LIVES HERE, SHE COULD HAVE.
NELSON ROCKEFELLER WANTED EVERYBODY TO ENJOY WHAT HE HAD ENJOYED THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE, SO HE PUT IN HIS WILL THAT WHEN HE PASSED AWAY, THIS HOME WOULD BE GIVEN TO THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION ALONG WITH 87 ACRES SURROUNDING THIS ESTATE THAT WOULD BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND TOURS WOULD BE GIVEN TO THE PUBLIC BY HISTORIC HUDSON VALLEY.
KYKUIT, THE ROCKEFELLER ESTATE, IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC MAY THROUGH MID NOVEMBER.

THE SOUTH STREET SEAPORT MUSEUM CHRONICLES THE HISTORY OF THE AREA THROUGH ITS HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND COLLECTION OF SHIPS.
THE FLAGSHIP OF THE COLLECTION IS THE NEWLY RESTORED WAVERTREE.
BUILT IN 1885, WAVERTREE CIRCLED THE WORLD FOUR TIMES BEFORE THE END OF HER SAILING CAREER AND REPRESENTS THE TYPE OF CARGO SHIPS THAT USED TO LINE SOUTH STREET.
CAPTAIN JONATHAN BULLWARE, THE MUSEUM'S DIRECTOR, SPOKE WITH "NYC ART "ABOUT WAVERTREE AND THE HISTORY OF SEAPORT.
>> THE MUSEUM IS A 50-YEAR-OLD INSTITUTION THAT EXISTS IN THE ORIGINAL PORT OF NEW YORK.
IT'S LOCATED IN THE BUILDINGS AND ADJACENT TO THE PIERS WITH A FLEET OF SHIPS THAT WERE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ORIGINAL PORT OF NEW YORK.
NEW YORK WAS A PORT BEFORE IT WAS A CITY.
FOR US, PLACE REALLY MATTERS.
WHERE WE ARE DOING OUR WORK IS IN ACTUAL THE ORIGINAL COUNTING HOUSES THAT ARE THE FIRST WORLD TRADE CENTER OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK.
THE SHIPPING PIERS AND CONNECTION TO THE REST OF THE WORLD IS WHAT BUILT NEW YORK, SO WE TELL THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE STORY OF MODERN NEW YORK.
IT'S USED TO DESCRIBE SOUTH STREET FROM THE BATTERY UP TO BROOKLYN BRIDGE AND BEYOND.
THE IMAGE OF THE STRENGTH OF SHIPS IS THAT OF THE HEAD RIG, THE SPAR THAT COMES OFF THE RIG, MEETING WITH THE CITY, HANGING OVER THE BUILDINGS THAT ARE THERE.
SIT THAT CONNECTION BETWEEN WATER BORN TRANSPORTATION AND THE GROWING METROPOLIS THAT REPRESENTS, REALLY, THE BIRTH PLACE OF NEW YORK AS WE KNOW IT.
THESE SHIPS WERE, IN THE 19th CENTURY, THE ENGINES OF TRADE.
THEY WERE BRINGING RAW MATERIALS IN AND MANUFACTURED MATERIALS OUT.
THEY WERE ALSO INSTRUMENT OF GLOBALIZATION, CONNECTION, THE INSTRUMENTS OF THE MIGRATION OF PEOPLES, OF CULTURAL EXCHANGE.
WAVERTREE IS OUR FLAGSHIP.
SHE IS A 1885 IRON SAILING SHIP.
MANY PEOPLE WOULD REFER TO HER AS A TALL SHIP.
AND SHE IS, FOR US, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN NEW YORK AND THE REST OF THE WORLD.
SO SHE WAS A GLOBE TROTTER.
SHE WAS WHAT'S CALLED A TRAMP FOR MOST OF HER LIFE.
TRAMP IS A NAME FOR A SHIP THAT WOULD CARRY ANY CARGO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD AS LONG AS IT PAID.
ON THE DAY WAVERTREE WAS LAUNCH IN THE SOUTH HAMPTON, ENGLAND, 1885, SHE WAS A PROFOUNDLY NORMAL SHIP.
NO MORE SPECIAL THAN A MACK TRUCK OR FREIGHT CAR TODAY.
BUT SHE IS THE LAST SURVIVING SHIP OF HER TYPE IN THE WORLD.
SHE HAS OUTLASTED ALL OF HER SISTERS.
SHE DID SO, ACTUALLY, BECAUSE OF WHAT I THINK YOU COULD CALL A SERIES OF HAPPY ACCIDENTS, WHICH MIGHT NOT HAVE SEEMED HAPPY AT ALL AT THE TIME.
IN 1910 DURING HER SECOND ATTEMPT TO TRY TO ROUND CAPE HORN, AT THE SOUTHERN END OF SOUTH AMERICA, AND PROBABLY TO MOST DANGEROUS IN THE WORLD, SHE WAS DEMASTED, WHICH MEANS HER RIG CAME FALLING DOWN TO THE DECK.
IRAN, STEEL, CABLE, CORDAGE, CANVAS ALL CAME CRASHING DOWN, DESTROYING THE SHIP'S ABILITY TO KILL, REMARKABLY KILLING NO ONE.
SHE WAS DECLARED BY HER OWNERS A FUNCTIONAL LOSS.
SHE WAS CONVERTED TO A WAREHOUSE, CONVERTED INTO A SAND BARGE.
SHE WAS FOUND BY SOUTH STREET SEAPORT MUSEUM.
1970 SHE CAME HERE.
WAVERTREE JUST COMPLETED IN 2016 A COMPLETELY UNPRECEDENTED RESTORATION PROJECT FUNDED BY THE CITY OF NEW YORK, A 16-MONTH RESTORATION THAT BROUGHT HER AS CLOSE TO SAILING AS SHE'S BEEN SINCE 1910.
LIFE ON A SAILING SHIP IN THE 19th CENTURY WAS A GRIM BUSINESS.
WHAT'S THE FUNCTION OF THE SHIPS?
THE JOB IS TO GET A SMALL PILE OF COAL, A COUPLE THOUSAND TONS OF COAL OR ITS EQUIVALENT HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD OR DIE TRYING, RIGHT?
SO, THE VERSION OF IMPORTANCE OF MONEY AND HUMAN LIFE BETWEEN THE 19th CENTURY AND NOW COULDN'T BE STATED.
CREW WERE EXPENDABLE.
SHIPS WERE NOT.
IT WAS A RIGID CLASS HIERARCHY.
YOU CAN SEE A STARK EXAMPLE OF THAT.
IN THE CABIN DOOR THAT LEAD TO THE CAB TAN'S SALOON, 6789 INSIDE SHE'S A VICTORIAN SHIP, SO POSH, CUSHIONS, CHAIRS, SETTEE, TEA SERVICELE ON THAT SIDE OF THE DOOR, BRIGHTLY FINISHED.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR, PAINTED WHITE.
UTILITARIAN.
WORK A DAY.
AND SO, TOO, WAS THE LIFESTYLE.
ABOARD THE SHIP, THE CAPTAIN ENJOYED A PRETTY COMFORTABLE EXISTENCE.
THE SAILORS LIVED FORWARD TOWARD THE BOW AND LIVED MANY MEN TO A CRAMPED THING, SLEEPING PERHAPS ON A MATTRESS, EATING SALTED MEAT OUT OF WOODEN BARRELS.
ONE OF THE IMPACTING THINGS ABOUT WAVERTREE, JUST SEEING HER, IS WALKING DOWN TO THE PIER AND SEEING THE MAJESTY OF HER TALL MASTS AND THE RIGGING NECESSARY TO MAKE A SHIP LIKE THAT WORK.
BUT THE REAL GEM IS TO GET INTO WAVERTREE AND GO DOWN INTO THE HOLD SPACE, WHICH IS OPEN THIS TIME FOR THE FIRST YEAR EVER AND BE ABLE TO TAKE IN THE SIZE AND SCALE OF A HUGE CARGO SHIP OF THE 19th CENTURY.
IT'S LIKE BEING INSIDE THE BELLY OF A WHALE OR IN A CATHEDRAL.
AT ONE TURN, INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL AND THE CONSTRUCTION IS BREATHTAKING, AND YET ITS FUNCTION WAS TO DO A VERY UNMAIN AND DIRTY JOB, AND THIS IS WHERE I WOULD SAY WAVERTREE IS TRULY UNIQUE.
THERE IS NOT ANOTHER SHIP IN THE WORLD THAT HAS A SPACE INSIDE LIKE THE ONE THAT WAVERTREE HAS.
SHE ISN'T THE SHIP THAT BUILT NEW YORK, BUT SHE IS OF THE CLASS OF SHIP THAT MADE NEW YORK WHAT IT IS, AND SO FOR US, PARTICULARLY AS THE LAST OF HER TYPE, SHE REPRESENTS NEW YORK'S CONNECTION TO THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE WORLD, THAT THE IN THE THIS CENTURY YOU COULD GET ON A SHIP LIKE WAVERTREE, GO OUT THE NARROWS, TURN LEFT, RIGHT, STRAIGHT, AND END UP ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

PART ONE, A LEXICON OF FASHION USES THE ORGANIZING PRINCIPLE OF A PATCHWORK QUILT.
THE QUILT, WHICH IS FROM AMERICAN WING COLLECTION WAS BEGUN IN 1856 BY ADDLINE HARRIS SEARS.
IT WAS ALSO SIGNED BY SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS AMERICANS OF THE PERIOD, INCLUDING EIGHT PRESIDENTS.
IT OPENED THE EXHIBITION AND SERVES A METAPHOR FOR THE U.S. AND ITS UNIQUE CULTURE IDENTITIES.
ABOUT 100 MEN'S AND WOMEN'S ENSEMBLES BY A DIVERSE RANGE OF DESIGNERS FROM THE 190s TO THE PRESENT ARE FEATURED.
PART, TWO AN ANTHOLOGY OF FASHION, FEATURES MEN'S AND WOMEN'S DRESS DATING FROM THE 18th CENTURY TO THE PRESENT, DISPLAYED IN 13 PERIOD ROOMS IN THE M.E.T.
'S AMERICAN WING.
NINE FILM DIRECTORS, INCLUDING SOFIA COPPOLA, REGINA KING, MARTIN SCORSESE, AND CHLOE ZHAO CREATED VIGNETTES THAT EXPLORE THE ROLE OF FASHION IN SHAPING AMERICAN IDENTITY AND ADDRESS THE COMPLEX AND LAYERED HISTORIES OF THE ROOMS.
TOGETHER, THE DISPLAYS REFLECT THE VITALITY AND DIVERSITY OF AMERICAN FASHION AND THOSE WHO HELP CREATE IT.

I'M THE CURATOR FOR THE ART OF THE 20th AND 21st CENTURY.
WE ARE IN FRONT OF A VERY DIFFICULT PIECE OF OUR COLLECTION.
THIS IS THE ENCYCLOPEDIAIC PALACE BY AN IMMIGRANT WHO SETTLED IN PENNSYLVANIA AROUND 1938.
AND THERE HE OPENED A SHOP WHERE HE WAS AN AUTO BODY MECHANIC, AND FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS IN THE BACKYARD OF HIS GARAGE, HE WORKED ON HIS ARCHITECTURAL MODEL.
HE EXPLAINED HIS PROJECT IN A HIGHLY DETAILED SIX-PAGE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE.
HE SAID, THIS BUILDING IS AN ENTIRELY NEW CONCEPT IN MUSEUMS, DESIGNED TO HOLD ALL THE WORKS OF MAN IN WHATEVER FIELD, DISCOVERIES MADE IN THOSE WHICH MAY FOLLOW.
EVERYTHING FROM THE WHALE TO THE SATELLITE.
THE MODEL IS SEVEN FEET HIGH, AND IT'S ON A SCALE OF 1 FOR 200.
THE OLD COMPLEX IS ENOUGH WIDE AND BRONZE WOOD COMPOUND CENTERS AROUND A TOWER, COMPOSED OF EIGHT SECTIONS.
THERE ARE FOUR ARCHED MAIN ENTRANCES SURMOUNTED BY THE FLAG OF ITALY, FRANCE, OF THE UNITED STATES, AND SPAIN.
HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND FUNCTIONALITY ARE OUTSTANDING.
YOU HAVE, FOR INSTANCE, ABOUT 800 WINDOWS MADE OF CLEAR CELLULOID AND CLEAR METAL SWINGING DOORS.
HIS PHILOSOPHIES AND SET OF VALUE ARE DESCRIBED ON TO THE PALACE.
YOU CAN READ THOSE DIFFERENT SENTENCES RELATED TO HIS OWN PERCEPTION OF, WE SHOULD BEHAVE AS CITIZENS, AS NEIGHBORS.
I DON'T THINK THAT HE WANTED TO BUILD IT JUST TO BE A MODEL.
HE WANTED TO REALLY REALIZE THAT ARCHITECTURE.
AND IF THIS ARCHITECTURE WOULD HAVE BEEN BUILT, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SPREAD OVER 16 CITY BLOCKS AND BEEN 136 STORIES HIGH.
MANY OF THE SELF-TAUGHT ARTISTS THAT WE HAVE IN OUR COLLECTION STARTED TO CREATE AT A SPECIFIC TIME OF THEIR LIFE.
IT'S OFTEN LIKE A TURNING POINT.
THEY EXPERIENCE SOME KIND OF PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THEIR LIFE.
THEY GOT INJURED.
THEY COULD NOT WORK ANYMORE.
IN THE CASE OF HIM, HE LEFT ITALY TO ESCAPE THE FASCIST ITALIAN PARTY.
A BIT BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY, HE SAID HE WOULD BE HAPPY IF THIS PIECE WOULD BE IN A MUSEUM FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS AND IT TOOK YEARS FOR THE PIECE TO BE RESTORED AT THE AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSEUM.

WE SEE THIS BLUE MOUNTAIN ANCHORING THE MOUNTAIN TO THE CA CANVAS.
IN THE FOREGROUND, A SERIES OF HORSE AND RIDERS.
YOU CAN ALMOST FEEL THE WIND RUSTLING THROUGH THE RIDERS' HAIR.

>> THE BUSCH HOLLY HOUSE PRESERVES TWO STORIES IN ITS HISTORY.
THE HOUSE BEGAN LIFE AS A HOME FOR PROSPEROUS MERCHANTS IN THE 18th CENTURY AND THEN GAINED RECOGNITION LATER AS A BOARDING HOUSE FOR THE AMERICAN ARTISTS AND WRITERS.
