Going into the promo shoot commercial, I was like, first of all, this is a game changer.
Ballroom going on Broadway.
But also like, this little teaser is just a little sizzle, just a little taste of what we're going to be doing on stage Whenever everything dropped in the train stations, it was like y'all are about to see me all over this city.
There we go.
Cats: The Jellicle Ball.
Look at us.
In New York City.
Bam!
That's right.
All over the city.
And from there, it all happened.
This is my Broadway debut.
I've never been in a Broadway production before, and we're about to go right upstairs to practice Magical Mister Mistoffelees Presto!
Let's go.
Thank you.
Hi, everyone.
Hello, hello, hello.
On this part of the stage, this is where everything is going to be happening.
Right here is basically the new staging replica that they have created.
They have made these little figures.
Here's Magical Mister Mistoffelees as the figure I am.
Rehearsals at New 42 was literally the hardest thing that I have done in my life.
To be able to really run through all the magic tricks with the jacket, the shoes, all of the props.
is like amazing.
Feeling everything run through so smoothly especially with my nails.
I'm like, everything is working out perfectly.
Yes.
My Aunt Marisol, who has her own nail tech company, Girl Talk Nails.
She made it for me, specifically for Magical Mister Mistoffelees and the number.
I love you, Auntie Marisol.
Being able to authentically be myself on this stage as a gender nonconforming individual in this world, on Broadway, making their Broadway debut, is such a fruitful, very fruitful experience.
This new revival of Cats: The Jellicle Ball is not like your mother's Cats.
We're not cats.
Were people that are walking ball within the ballroom context.
When the show started Off-Broadway downtown at PAC NYC I did not know what to think.
I was like, okay, we're about to show these people what ballroom is.
One thing that I really would like for the people to leave with that come and see this production is that you are absolutely, undoubtedly, positively able to be yourself.
Welcome to Staten Island, my home.
I'm about to get ready for rehearsal.
We're going to go to the Broadhurst.
Let's hit it.
(cat meows) She's my baby.
She's... awwww.
Good morning, I would say Ballroom and having a house.
What it really means to me is it's a safe space that people can come to and be themselves.
I'm the founding mother of the Royal Haus of Silk in the Kiki scene.
I'm not the mother of these children that are in my house, but I am a caretaker in some way.
I'm their leader, making sure that what I do on the floor also bleeds out into my real life.
I went to Juilliard.
I went to the Governor's School.
I've done many things.
It correlates all together to create that space that helps people build themselves and find a space for themselves that they can be creative and be like, this is where I deserve to be.
The name Silk, which is my name in ballroom, Silk came about because I'm tall Im lanky and I feel like I look like a silk fabric.
But I was like, that's not what it's going to be.
You want to know what the catch is?
Its because I like Silk milk.
The almond milk.
Commuting to rehearsal every day from Staten Island has definitely been a journey.
I have to wake up quite earlier than Id normally like to.
I'm not a morning person at all.
Me and Jonathan Burke, who is Mungojerrie in the show, Oh my goodness.
are in the NYC streets.
It's so cool.
This is literally the best time of my life.
Like to even be able to do this and show the world who I am.
It It means a lot.
We are on 44th Street of Times Square visiting the Broadhurst Theater where Cats: The Jellicle Ball is going to be.
And me on the marquee in the front of the building.
Being able to walk into the theater every day is like a dream come true.
It was like, Whoa.
Were really about to open this production of Cats: The Jellicle Ball.
Now we are in the theater of the Broadhurst.
I am so excited.
I cannot wait to share myself with the world.
Tonight is the first preview of Cats: The Jellicle Ball.
Y'all see that?
That's me!
Everyone, this is my Aunt Marisol.
Remember when I was telling you about the nails that I was wearing?
This is my fan.
Getting to do the performance for the first time in front of people was very nerve-wracking, to say the least.
It really was an emotional experience.
Walking out and seeing everyone at the block party ball was so dope.
Like we had a ball on 44th Street in front of the theater, like that was... It is literally the most amazing experience, the most amazing time.
I have made my Broadway debut.
People were crying like they were walking up to me, like telling me how much I really touched their heart.
We're really doing it.
We're changing people's lives.
Thee Aries Josiah Martinez-Wade is my best friend, but he's my gay son and to be able to invite him to my opening night for him to see his best friend but his mother make their Broadway debut.
I wouldnt want him to miss this moment.
Everybodys texting me “Happy opening!” Im going to have to answer those later.
It's opening night, y'all.
We're heading to the theater.
I'm so excited to see you soon.
I'm going to see you there.
And if I don't?
If I don't?
Be square.
I feel amazing.
I'm about to go get changed for the step and repeat and the yellow carpet and live the best life of my dreams.
You know it.
The yellow carpet, the step and repeat before the show was really cool.
I wanted to be able to wear my own creation.
I'm not just a dancer.
I'm a seamstress as well.
This is like a dream.
Like it really is a dream.
I feel like I'm in a movie right now, but it's so real.
But being able to walk on the yellow carpet and talk to the press, get photos taken of me, people are really celebrating me for who I am.
Making my Broadway debut as the Magical Mister Mistoffelees was literally magical.
Once we got to the end.
It's the period in the long story of what it took for me to get here.
Like, this really felt like the moment.
Being able to share it with the people that I love really means a lot.
I'll see y'all later.
